The Story of the Color
Last summer, I introduced Silver Tide as part of a preorder experiment. While the experiment didn't continue, the color stayed with me. Every now and then I would catch a glimpse of one of the original pieces and be reminded just how beautiful it was. Some colors quietly fade into the background. Silver Tide never did and I'm delighted to bring it back.
Silver Tide is inspired by the waters surrounding Vinalhaven on a bright summer day when the tide is moving and the ocean shimmers from within. The color lives somewhere between blue and green, carrying the clarity of shallow coastal water and the luminous glow that appears when sunlight dances across the surface. Suspended within the glass are flashes of silver light that appear and disappear as the piece moves, much like sunlight skipping across a wave before vanishing again.
What I love most about this color is its sense of motion. Even when resting quietly on a table, it feels alive. The glass catches the light differently throughout the day, revealing new layers of color and reflection with every turn. One moment it feels calm and peaceful, the next it sparkles with the energy of wind across open water.
Living on an island means becoming intimately familiar with the rhythm of the tides. They shape our shorelines, our schedules, and often our moods. They remind us that change is constant and that beauty often arrives in subtle shifts rather than dramatic moments. Silver Tide carries a little of that lesson. It is a color that invites you to slow down, notice the light, and appreciate the small moments that might otherwise slip past unnoticed.
I'm especially happy that this color has found its way back into the studio. Sometimes a color simply needs a second season. Silver Tide returns not as an experiment, but as what it always was: a beautiful celebration of light, water, and the ever-changing colors of life on the coast of Maine.
As with all of my limited color runs, Silver Tide will be available only while the glass lasts. When the final piece finds its home, the color and its name will be retired, becoming part of the growing story of the Color Archive.
About the Jewelry
Each piece of Silver Tide jewelry begins as sheets of carefully selected dichroic glass. I hand-cut, layer, and kiln-fire the glass in my Vinalhaven studio, transforming raw materials into luminous glass stones that capture and reflect light in remarkable ways.
